One Voice for Livable Islands Coalition to Move Bicycling and Walking Forward in 2009

Kauai Path, Inc. has joined the One Voice for Livable Islands coalition. This umbrella organization is made up of many other community organizations that want to make Hawaii more walking and bicycling friendly. Kauai Path representatives are in discussions with fellow One Voice for Livable Islands members on how best to coordinate our efforts to make lasting positive changes for walking and bicycling. Groups such as AARP, the Sierra Club Hawaii Chapter, American Heart Association, Hawaii Bicycling League, Peoples’ Advocacy for Trails Hawaii (PATH), Maui Bicycle Alliance, and others will be an advocacy force to be reckoned with in the coming years.
We will be asking Kauai bicyclists to step up to the plate in 2009 and help support our collective efforts. We may be asking for support of this effort by writing/emailing our legislators (especially Representatives Mina Morita and Roland Sagum, and Senator Gary Hooser) in support of One Voice’s efforts. We may also be asking for your assistance to help out, or sponsor, events and seminars.

This past year has seen real progress:

  • on our East Side the Kapaa to Kealia phase of Ke Ala Hele Makalae is now open for public enjoyment,
  • funding is in place and construction  has begun on the Lydgate Park to Lihi Park section of Ke Ala Hele Makalae,
  • the South Shore has a completed, forward thinking Koloa-Poipu Area Circulation Plan,
  • the county has allocated $400,000 towards the environmental work and design of Hapa Trail as a multi-use path.

We need to continue banding together—creating a more livable, sustainable, and healthy Kauai and Hawaii.
